Continuum Acquires Thoemmes Press

(10 July 2003) The Continuum International Publishing Group Ltd (“Continuum”) announced today that it had purchased the entire share capital of Thoemmes Ltd (“Thoemmes  Press”).

Thoemmes Press was established by Rudi Thoemmes in 1989 and has built a highly respected place in Philosophy and History of Ideas publishing, especially for the library reference market. With series such as its Biographical Dictionaries and History of American Thought programs, Thoemmes Press has become a leader in this sector of the Philosophy publishing market.

With the recent divestments of its Counselling and Business Lists, Continuum has been concentrating its publishing in the Humanities (especially Literature, Linguistics, Philosophy, Education, Film and Music Studies) and Theology and Biblical Studies. Continuum stated that the proceeds from these sales would be used to fund further acquisitions in its core areas. The purchase of Thoemmes Press significantly strengthens Continuum’s position in Philosophy, a position which originates from Continuum’s acquisition of The Athlone Press in January 2001.

Rudi Thoemmes will remain with the business he built up and will head an editorial and production team working from the Thoemmes offices in Bristol with the objective of expanding the list, especially the Biographical Dictionaries program.

Philip Sturrock, Chairman of Continuum said, “We are delighted that Rudi and his distinguished publishing business have decided to join the Continuum Group. This will transform our position in Philosophy publishing, which is a key expansion area for us”.

Rudi Thoemmes, Founder and Chief Executive of Thoemmes Press said, “This is an exciting fit with great potential. It will enable us to focus on what we are best at: the developing of large-scale projects in the History of Ideas. With Continuum’s existing programs of monographs and textbooks we have the basis of a complete service to the academic community.”

The van Tulleken Company represented the shareholders of Thoemmes Press.
