July 1, 2004 - Transaction Publishers and Walter de Gruyter, Inc are pleased to announce the acquisition of the assets of Aldine de Gruyter by Transaction, effective June 30, 2004. The van Tulleken Company represented the shareholders of Aldine de Gruyter. For the past quarter century, Aldine de Gruyter, located in Hawthorne, New York, has been a division of Walter de Gruyter, Inc, publishing books as well as the distinguished journal Human Nature, now completing its fifteenth volume year. Aldine has approximately 340 titles in print. Prior to its acquisition by Walter do Gruyter in 1978 Aldine was an independent social science publisher based in Chicago. Launched in the early sixties, Aldine has been a cutting edge publisher of major figures and trends in the field's f sociology, anthropology and economics. In recent years, Aldine has refined and extended its editorial stream to include such fields of research as sociobiology, physical anthropology and public policy. Transaction, publisher of record in international social science, was founded in 1962. Nearly 3500 of the approximately 50000 titles published by Transaction still remain in print. Transaction publishes approximately 120 new titles in all disciplines of the social sciences. In addition Transaction distributes the scholarly works of international publishers within North America and other territories. The Transaction Periodicals Consortium publishes more than 25 scholarly and professional journals including Transaction's flagship publication Society. It also issues more than twenty annual and serial publications, also aimed at the international social science marketplace. Commenting on the acquisition, Irving Louis Horowitz, Chairman of the Board and Editorial Director of Transaction Publishers, said "In both principles and practices, Aldine and Transaction have long been joined at the hip. Indeed, Aldine distributes the first twenty four Transaction paperback titles, derived from our flagship Transaction/Society. Throughout, the two firms have tapped similar reservoirs of professional strength and academic personnel. Respected names such as Howard S Becker, Anselm Strauss, Lee Rainwater, Warren Bennis, John Gagnon, John R Howard and countless others, have appeared on the lists published by both Aldine and Transaction. Our synergy and isomorphism is such as to permit past lists, present commitments, and future aims of Aldine to become an integral part of Transaction. The name and logo of Aldine will remain alive and well as part of the Transaction publishing effort. We intend to keep the books Aldine has published over the years in print and market them to relevant professional publics. The new editorial directions recently undertaken by Aldine will be incorporated into the academic streams long identified with Transaction Publishers." Eckert Scheffler, Vice President and General Manager of Walter de Gruyter, Inc., the US subsidiary of Walter de Gruyter GmbH, KG stated "Given such antecedents and current linkages at the scholarly level it is natural enough for Transaction to acquire Aldine's published books and contracts for forthcoming titles. Aldine has maintained high standards and firm commitments to the best research and most outstanding scholars in its upper division text and professional monograph publications. We are pleased to pass on the Aldine tradition to a publisher committed to social science publishing."
